Lower Mustang Classic Trail – Culture, Caves & Canyon Landscapes

Muktinath, in the Mustang district, is one of the major trekking destinations in Annapurna Region. Muktinath is the most famous pilgrimage place for Hindu and Buddhist and the main shrine here is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the Buddhist Gompa.

Near the Temple you will observe the 108 water spouts from which holy water pours out and you will also observe an eternal flame fed by natural gas. The highlights of this trek include beautiful mountain scenery, pristine forests, and a diversity of flora and fauna. It gives you the chance to interact with the warm hearted and kind simple Gurung and Magar people, whose rich and varied customs give you an insight into their typical lifestyle and their culture and tradition.

The Jomsom trek is a classic trek which is considered as one of the best trekking trails in the world according to Modern Maturity (USA). This trek lies in the Mustang district and takes you along the Kalagandaki river bed and climbs out of the valley to one of the most holy temples in Nepal. While doing the Jomsom trek you will also be doing Muktinath trekking, the famous trekking destination in Annapurna Region. 

The marvelous views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Himchuli, Machhapuchchhre and Thorang peak make your journey rewarding as well as awe – inspiring. On the way you will pass the world’s deepest gorge, Kaligandaki bordered between Annapurna and Dhaulagir mountains. The Jomsom trek offers you the experience of a lifetime, exploring the natural beauty of the Himalaya.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350 m) – Transfer to Hotel
A Nord Extreme Himalaya representative will pick you up from the international airport and transfer you to your hotel, which is only about a 20-minute drive. If time permits, we will discuss the trip and check your equipment.

Day 02: Drive to Pokhara
Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Enjoy the scenic journey along the Prithvi Highway and settle into your hotel in Pokhara.

Day 03: Fly to Jomsom (2,710 m) – Trek to Kagbeni (2,800 m)
Take a short morning flight to Jomsom. From there, begin your trek to Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang.
Overnight: Teahouse/Lodge in Kagbeni

Day 04: Kagbeni (2,800 m) – Trek to Muktinath (3,800 m)
Trek through dramatic landscapes and high desert terrain to reach the sacred site of Muktinath. Explore the temple and surrounding area.

Day 05: Muktinath (3,800 m) – Trek to Marpha (2,670 m) / Tukuche (2,590 m)
Descend through the scenic Kali Gandaki valley to the charming villages of Marpha or Tukuche, known for apple orchards and traditional architecture.
Overnight: Teahouse/Lodge in Marpha/Tukuche

Day 06: Marpha/Tukuche – Trek to Kalopani (2,530 m)
Continue trekking through beautiful villages and rugged landscapes to reach Kalopani.

Day 07: Excursion to Tiji Lake
Take a morning or afternoon walk to Tiji Lake, a serene high-altitude lake surrounded by mountains. Return to Marpha or Tukuche for overnight stay.

Day 08: Marpha/Tukuche – Trek to Jomsom
Trek back to Jomsom, retracing the scenic trail along the Kali Gandaki River.
Overnight: Teahouse/Lodge in Jomsom

Day 09: Fly back to Pokhara – Free Afternoon
Take an early morning flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. Spend the afternoon at leisure exploring the lakeside area or relaxing.
Overnight: Hotel in Pokhara

Day 10: Drive or Fly Back to Kathmandu
Return to Kathmandu by tourist bus or opt for private transport. Alternatively, take a short 25-minute flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu. Transfer to your hotel and rest.

Day 11: Departure from Kathmandu
Transfer to the international airport for your flight back home.

The Lower Mustang Classic Trail is a perfect blend of rugged landscapes, traditional villages, and cultural heritage. Trekking here offers breathtaking views of the Kali Gandaki valley and Tibetan-influenced monasteries. Nord Extreme Himalaya comes highly recommended for this journey.
