Saribung Expedition – Into the Heart of Mustang’s Hidden Mountains
Mt. Saribung Expedition is one the popular expeditions in the Mustang region. It is located in Damodar himal range close to Nepal Tibet border in the corner of Upper Mustang trekking trails. It was opened in 2006 by the Nepal government for the expedition. The Saribung trekking offers a beautiful view of snow-capped mountains of three different trekking destinations like Mt.Dhaulagiri(8167m), Mt.Manaslu(8163m) and Mt. Annapurna (8091m). Mustang is the last forbidden kingdom of Nepal with the beautiful landscape, mixed culture and adventurous Saribung pass.
The trails are rugged, cutting high into the cliff sides and asses, villages that have little changed over the centuries. It is one of the easiest expeditions in Nepal, one should physically fit for the expedition so that they can passes with ice and creases in between Damodar Kunda region and Nar-Phu valley. The trek starts goes from one place to another with great sceneries, cultures, religion and geographical variations. Hence trekkers can enjoy the fantastic and picturesque views of diversity in this region.
This Saribung Expedition is aimed at people who want a unique experience with an emphasis on trekking with a few days of climbing thrown into the mix. You will enjoy a fully supported, full service camping trek style expedition. A high level of supervision is given on the climbing sections, so little technical expertise is necessary with top guides and Sherpas on the job.
Day 1 – Arrival in Kathmandu (1,348 m):
Arrive in Kathmandu, meet your guide at the airport, and transfer to the hotel. Check in, attend a short briefing, and enjoy an orientation walk around the local area. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2 – Sightseeing in Kathmandu Valley:
Explore the holy sites of Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Stupa, Boudhanath Stupa, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Necessary trekking and climbing permits will be arranged. Overnight at hotel.
Day 3 – Drive to Pokhara (900 m):
After breakfast, your trekking staff will pick you up for a scenic 6–7 hour drive to Pokhara, the city of lakes. Evening free to explore the lakeside area. Overnight at hotel.
Day 4 – Fly to Jomsom and trek to Kagbeni (2,800 m, 3 hrs):
Take an early morning flight to Jomsom, flying between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs. Meet the trekking staff and start the trek to Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang. Overnight at lodge.
Day 5 – Trek to Chaile (3,050 m, 5 hrs):
Trek along the east bank of the Kali Gandaki, passing Tangbe and Chhusang villages, crossing river gorges and rocky ridges to reach Chaile. Overnight at lodge.
Day 6 – Trek to Geling (3,500 m, 5–6 hrs):
Climb along steep, treeless terrain, crossing passes and ridges, descending into gorges, and passing Samar and Shyangmochen to reach Geling village. Overnight at lodge.
Day 7 – Trek to Charang (3,620 m, 5–6 hrs):
Ascend to Nyi La pass, cross the Tangmar Chu river, and admire the spectacular Mani Wall. Continue to Charang village, visiting its five-story Dzong and red Gompa. Overnight at lodge.
Day 8 – Trek to Lo-Manthang (3,840 m, 4–5 hrs):
Walk to Lo-Gekar Gompa, one of Nepal’s oldest monasteries, then continue to the walled city of Lo-Manthang, exploring the plateau and panoramic views of the Mustang Valley. Overnight at lodge.
Day 9 – Exploration day at Lo-Manthang:
Explore Namgyal Gompa, Tingkhar village, and other key attractions such as the Tall Champa Lakhang, Thugchen Gompa, and the Raja’s palace. Overnight at lodge.
Day 10 – Trek to Yara (3,900 m, 6–7 hrs):
Leave Lo-Manthang, trek through Dhi village, descend for lunch, then climb to Yara village. Overnight at tented camp.
Day 11 – Trek to Luri Gompa (4,005 m, 6–7 hrs):
Short trek along the river to Luri Cave Monastery, a 15th-century site with ancient statues and a large Chhorten. Overnight at tented camp.
Day 12 – Trek to Ghuma Thanti (4,600 m, 7–8 hrs):
Follow barren valleys, crossing a 5,100 m pass, and trek to Ghuma Thanti. Overnight at tented camp.
Day 13 – Trek to Namta Khola (4,890 m, 8 hrs):
Cross a 5,600 m pass and visit Damodar Kunda before arriving at Namta Khola. Overnight at tented camp.
Day 14 – Trek to Saribung Base Camp (4,950 m, 6–7 hrs):
Trek across the Tibetan plateau, gaining altitude to reach Saribung Base Camp. Overnight at tented camp.
Day 15 – Acclimatization Day:
Rest and explore surrounding hills to acclimatize. Overnight at tented camp.
Day 16 – Base Camp to Camp I (5,730 m, 5–6 hrs):
Climb through snowy terrain to reach Camp I, moving slowly due to challenging high-altitude conditions. Overnight at camp.
Day 17 – Summit Saribung Peak (6,346 m) and return to Base Camp (8–9 hrs):
Early morning ascent to Saribung Peak, enjoy summit views, then descend back to Base Camp. Overnight at camp.
Day 18 – Cross Saribung Pass (5,600 m) to Nagoru (4,400 m, 7–8 hrs):
Traverse the Saribung Pass, descend through snow trails, and follow streams to reach Nagoru. Overnight at camp.
Day 19 – Contingency Day:
Reserved for rest or unforeseen delays. Overnight at camp.
Day 20 – Trek to Phu Gaon (4,080 m, 5–6 hrs):
Trek across Tibetan plateau and barren valleys, visiting Tashi Lakhang Monastery, with panoramic views of Himlung Himal. Overnight at camp.
Day 21 – Trek to Meta (3,560 m, 5–6 hrs):
Descend through narrow valleys, passing Khampa settlement ruins, with views of Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal, reaching Meta village. Overnight at camp.
Day 22 – Trek to Koto (2,600 m, 6 hrs):
Steep descent through pine forests, streams, and waterfalls to reach Koto. Overnight at camp.
Day 23 – Drive Besisahar to Kathmandu:
Drive back to Kathmandu, enjoying scenic landscapes and mountain views. Transfer to hotel. Overnight at hotel.
Day 24 – Leisure Day in Kathmandu:
Relax at hotel or explore the city. This reserve day can be used in case of flight delays or for rest after trekking. Overnight at hotel.
Day 25 – Departure:
Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward flight, concluding your Himalayan adventure
